Suggested UFA targets for the Ducks, and the latest on Zach Parise and Andy Greene.
ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER: Mark Whicker suggested Nashville’s Joel Ward, Pittsburgh’s Max Talbot, Phoenix’s Vernon Fiddler and Eric Belanger and Philadelphia’s Ville Leino as potential UFA targets for the Ducks this summer.
DAILYBULLETIN.COM: J.P. Hoornstra reported Ducks GM Bob Murray will focus on his defense plus the futures of Teemu Selanne and Jonas Hiller this summer. He feels Murray should have enough cap space to re-sign goalie Ray Emery if Hiller vertigo symptoms persist into next season, plus he considers UFAs Todd Marchant and Andreas Lilja long shots to return.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Either of those four Whicker suggested would make fine additions to the Ducks forward lines, but of those list perhaps only Fiddler or Belanger could be available.
NORTHJERSEY.COM: recently conducted an online “Q&A” session between New Jersey Devils forward Zach Parise and Devils fans, where Parise again reiterated his desire to re-sign with the club but couldn’t cast any more light on his contract status because negotiations had yet to begin.
NJ.COM: Rich Chere reports defenseman Andy Greene is willing to forego free agency if he got the right offer from the Devils. GM Lou Lamoriello has stated he’d like to retain Greene, a pending UFA this summer who would prefer to stay put. Greene has spoken to Lamoriello but so far there’s been no contract offer.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Lamoriello doesn’t have to rush into opening contract negotiations with these two as there’s still two months to go until July 1st, when Greene becomes a UFA and Parise (if unsigned and not taken to arbitration) could be eligible to receive offer sheets from rival clubs. It’s my opinion the Devils GM, who has limited cap space to work with this summer, could be waiting to find out how much next season’s cap ceiling will be before officially starting contract talks.
