Updates on the Red Wings and Hurricanes – August 16, 2012.

More speculation the Detroit Red Wings are pursuing Keith Yandle, while the Carolina Hurricanes need a physical defenseman.

NESN.COM: cited a recent report from The Detroit News claiming the Red Wings had inquired about Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Keith Yandle. This came on the heels of a recent report from MLive.com claiming the Wings had contacted the Calgary Flames regarding Jay Bouwmeester. The Detroit News article claimed the Coyotes “perilous ownership situation” could be complicating matters regarding Yandle.

Red Wings pursuing Yandle?

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I wouldn’t be surprised if the Wings contacted the Coyotes about Yandle’s status, or the Flames about Bouwmeester. That being said, I don’t believe Yandle’s available, and I’m growing more convinced Bouwmeester isn’t going anywhere.

As I’ve frequently noted, the Coyotes were fielding offers for Yandle during the entry draft weekend but weren’t actively shopping him, and have reportedly decided since then to retain Yandle. As for Bouwmeester, I get the sense Flames GM Jay Feaster remains reluctant to shake up his club’s core.

Let’s not overlook the fact neither club are going to just give either guy away. Both teams would want a good scoring forward in return, which the Wings cannot spare. If they trade one of their scoring forwards for Yandle or Bouwmeester, they’ll resolve one problem, but create another.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Luke DeCock recently reported the Hurricanes, for all their moves this summer, failed to make significant additions to their blueline. They still haven’t found a suitable replacement for Bryan Allen, who “brought bulk and a physical edge” to a Hurricanes blueline sorely lacking in those qualities.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Hurricanes could try to address that issue via trade or free agency, though there’s really not much currently available in either market.

  1. Adding Staal will greatly help their defensive game.

  2. If DeCock says it…I wouldn’t put much credence in it!
My sense is the Canes are looking to have a more mobile
offensive-minded D! Expect to see Murphy make an immediate impression, while guys like Mcbain, and Faulk
continue to put a lot of pressure on defenses with their offensive ability.

  3. Lock-out!

  4. I’m kinda surprised no one signed Kubina yet. I’m not saying he’s a top 4 D anymore but hes a mammoth of a man still capable of playing in the NHL in my opinion.

    • Kubina’s a shell of what he once was. Injuries and age have had an effect on his mobility and he just isn’t the player he was for the Bolts in the ’04 Cup run.
He was a healthy scratch numerous times in Philly after the deadline trade, even with Mez hurt, so that should give some insight as to what to expect from him in the 2012-13 season.

  5. hey, my sabres have about 10 d-men , i have no idea why, but we do. i think we obviously SHOULD have a package deal ready for a veteran centerman. im not saying carolina necassarily has that vet centerman, but in general we are over loaded and can def send some to a defense lacking team.

  6. I wonder if the wings or the canes might be interested in Keith Ballard of the canucks. He has had a bad rap with coach V but has shown at times to be a physical D with a flare for the offence. Vancouver would be easily pushed to trade this guy and at a cap of 4.2m reasonably priced.

    • It seems like every Canuck fan and their mother want to see Ballard in another jersey as soon as possible. Usually, players with bad raps EARN those reputations and usually, those types of players don’t interest the 29 other GM’s in the League. Nobody wants to part with a positive asset for a negative return.

      • My mother is pretty keen on keeping Ballard. I bet the Canucks would get more be sending Alberts to Carolina. He had some good years there, is a big body and hasn’t really fit the Canucks system.

  7. What no update today on Shane Doan or Bobby Ryan ?
Holy Cow, what’s left to check on

  8. I’m afraid if I had a name like “Luke DeCock” I’d either become a porn star or change it….

  9. I think Carolina should seriously consider talking with the sharks about Douglas Murray. He is a big, physical shut down D, who will drop the gloves when called on, and is fantastic at protecting the puck in the corners and behind the net. He could likely be had for a 2nd round pick too since he only has a year left on his current contract. A good deal for both teams.

    • Dougls Murray is dating Tiger Woods ex-wife.I’d trade for him just to see her hanging around the rink.

  10. i would be checking on names like orielly, ennis, subban, kane @ alforducks.
these guys are waiting on new cba to see a contract ???, i havent a clue. all i know is, why hasnt philly gone after all of them with an offer sheet, is holmgren going senile?

    • If and I said if I was to trade Ryan then Subban would be very interesting, so would Kane ( Evander).

  11. Uncle Slavko. Are you 12 years old?

  12. Coyotes can really afford to trade Yandle now. If Doan does leave they’ll need him to step up and be the face of the franchise and likely the captain of the team.

  13. I personally think if a team is looking for some d-men with bulk that come at a cheap price and are great guys filling out your bottom pairing that Rozsival, Jurcina, and Gilroy are good guys to look at. I also believe maybe take a flyer on Cam Barker and hope for the best. None of these are top 4 all stars, but they can bring size and character to the back end.

  14. I like Jurcina always have,he hits is big and can eat up minutes. The rest of what is available in experienced D men are old and injury prone;(Coliacovo,Rosival,Kubina)
