Vermette Dealt to Coyotes.

Vermette heads to Phoenix.

Various sources reports the Columbus Blue Jackets have dealt forward Antoine Vermette to the Phoenix Coyotes. Details to follow.

**UPDATE** TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports the return is goaltender Curtis McElhinney, Ottawa’s second round pick in 2012, and a fifth rounder in 2015.

SPECTOR’S NOTE:A good move on the Coyotes part to add depth to their forward lines in Vermette, a speedy, versatile two-way player who can play center or the wing.  Currently, he has 27 points in 60 games, and has three more years at an average salary of $3.75 million remaining on his contract, so he’s definitely more than a rental player for the Coyotes, who are determined to secure a playoff spot for the third straight year. As for the Blue Jackets,  they add some much-needed goaltending depth to their system, and free up some cap space  be used to add more depth in future deals.

  1. Does this point to the fact that the Coyotes will be sold soon, or did the NHL allow Maloney to make the deal regardless of the ownership situation.

I think the key return is Ottawa’s second as McEIlhenney is the very definition of a journeyman. Although that probably means an improvement in Columbus.

  2. That’s a steal for Phoenix. he will add some great depth for the playoff chase.

  3. McEIlhenney is injured for the year and just meant to keep phx at 50 contracts.

My feeling is the Jackets got hosed – especially given what Yzerman got for quincey yesterday.

  4. I hate watching this guy play. Savvy move, for sure. But God, his game is ugly.

  5. Vermette is not the guy the Jackets should be dealing and they def get hosed in the deal. Vermette is a 3 time 20 goal scorer, two seasons ago showed what he could do. I would have at least tried to get another 2nd or maybe Brett McClean out of the deal. Smart move by the ‘Yotes.

Vermette’s two way style of play and chippy offense fits right into their system not too mention he is a decent size at 6’1″ almost 200 lbs. Anyway best of luck to Vermette in PHO, I hope he helps them to the playoffs.

  6. i think vermette can help phoenix
