Wild Trade Setoguchi to the Jets.

TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports the Minnesota Wild have traded winger Devin Setoguchi to the Winnipeg Jets for a second round pick in 2014.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: After being quiet during the opening day of the NHL free agent frenzy, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff pulls off a trade to bolster his offensive depth.

Setoguchi, 26, has struggled since his career-best 65-point season with San Jose four years ago, though he managed a reasonable 27 points in 48 games last season. The Jets will be hoping he’ll regain that long-lost scoring touch. He also has one year at $3 million remaining on his contract so this is an affordable pick-up both in salary as well as term for the Jets.

As for the Wild, they shed a big chunk of salary, boosting their cap space to over $5.2 million. It remains to be seen if they’ll use some of that in the UFA market.

  1. Not a bad deal for either side. He never lived up to potential in Minny.
