Zidlicky now a Devil.

Various sources report tonight the Minnesota Wild have traded defenseman Marek Zidlicky to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for defenseman Kurtis Foster, Nick Palmieri, Stephane Veilleux, a 2nd round pick (formerly from the Capitals) in 2012 and a conditional pick in 2013.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Earlier this month Zidlicky had indicated a willingness to waive his movement clause to go to the Devils but Wild management wanted to field other offers first. The Devils offer was obviously considerably better, as the Wild get back a familiar defenseman in Foster, who’d played for them previously in his career, plus a couple of depth forwards in Palmieri and Veilleux. Of the two, Palmieri could have a future with the Wild. The extra draft picks give Wild management a little more depth to play with, both in this year’s draft and next. As for the Devils, they land an experienced puck-moving defenseman in Zidlicky who’s hoping to regain his form after failing to fit in with Wild coach Mike Yeo’s system. He’s aging (35), and has one more year at $4 million left on his contract, but if he can find his groove with the Devils, it could be a worthwhile addition.

Wasn’t worth the 2nd round pick alone. Devils overpaid. He’s not even an improvement on their line-up. You give all that for 14 assists and a -6 paying him 3 million dollars more than he’s worth next year. Well if they had salary cap doubts about Parise, they just elevated. Man, Minnesota dumps salary and gets draft picks. What the hell was Lamoriello thinking?

  2. Boltsnation says:

Blame Yzerman for it, he set to standard for defensemen.

  3. Innovator says:

All the extra bodies makes me think Lou needed space to add contracts.

  4. Grizzledbear says:

The Wild fleeced Lamoriello on this deal. Has Lou lost his mind?

  5. Sukh says:

Jersey had to give back $$$$ to make the deal. Remember the league is lending them money to run their operations, and they have given Lou an internal budget to work with. That money is 2 extra marginal players at a cost of 1.3 mill plus

The 2nd round pick hurts, but ultimately the Devils are upgrading Foster and losing two guys who they wouldn’t really be using this year. Veilleux they wouldn’t use at all, and while Palmieri is young and does have some potential, he would be struggling to keep a fourth line spot at the Devils this year and never looked like being the player the Devils thought he would be, even when playing on the second line with Kovy. Definitely a lot to send to the Wild, but nothing that it will hurt the Devils to lose (other than the picks).

Zidlicky isn’t that bad of a player but NJ way overpaid for him. What could the Sabres get for a guy like Leopold that has a year left at $3M and is a proven TWD and can eat up big minutes in the playoffs?

  8. MJR I says:

I don’t care about the other players, a little about Palmieri because he might have become a third liner, but the others no. The 2nd rounder shouldn’t have been traded. Essentially the deal includes the main piece of what they got for Langenbrunner last year. What, do the Devils not like 2nd round picks?! Do they like overpaying defencemen?

So now we have Tallinder and Zidlicky who are overpaid. Defencemen who not only can’t steal the puck, but can’t cover it in their own end. I hope those forwards enjoy being ppg players and -10 at the end of the year cuz of these dolts who are defensively irresponsible. Greene at least has improved in that department, but Greene is ten times better than Zidlicky is. Man what a stupid move… stupid stupid stupid. Handcuff the team or what.

  9. Greg Schuler says:

I don’t think it is a handcuff, but it is an overpay.
