TSN’s Aaron Ward reported today the St. Louis Blues signed former Canucks center Derek Roy to a one-year, $4 million contract.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Given how much the free agent market has slowed following yesterday’s frenzy of signings, the Roy signing could be the most notable today.
The Blues were seeking an experienced top-six center and Roy was among the few remaining in the free agent market, but his stock has noticeably declined in recent years. His numbers have been in steady decline since his career-best 81-point performance in 2007-08.
Since last summer he’s bounced from the Sabres to the Dallas Stars to the Canucks, managing 28 points in 42 games, and only one assist in the Canucks four-game sweep at the hands of the San Jose Sharks in the opening round of the 2013 playoffs. Injuries have also taken a toll upon the 30-year-old veteran. This could be his last best shot at proving himself as a top-six center.
