Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke ends weeks of silence to deny links between his club and Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo.

Burke denies deal in place with Canucks for Luongo.

SPORTSNET.CA: In a recent interview with the Hockey Central at Noon panel, Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke emphatically denied there was a deal in place with the Vancouver Canucks which would ship goaltender Roberto Luongo post-lockout to the Leafs. “You’re talking about a player that’s under contract with another team,” Burke explained. “I emphatically deny that’s not true. There is no deal in place… for this player or any other player” on the Canucks. Burke acknowledged he and Canucks GM Mike Gillis disagree on many things, but this is one point they agree upon.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Burke’s statement contradicts what Sportsnet’s John Shannon stated several weeks ago, when he suggested the Leafs and Canucks had a deal involving Luongo moving to Toronto post-lockout. Should be interesting to hear Shannon’s take on the subject. I have a feeling this isn’t the last we’ll hear on the “Luongo-to-Toronto” speculation.
