The Montreal Canadiens have acquired defenseman Mike Weaver from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2015.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Bit of a curious move by the Habs, who are struggling to score this season. They’re already carrying seven defensemen, with David Drewiske due to return soon from injury. They also recently traded a defenseman by sending Raphael Diaz to Vancouver for center Dale Weise.
Either Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin is intent on loading up his blueline for the upcoming playoffs, or perhaps he’s planning to move out another defenseman in a separate move. No, I don’t believe this means he plans on trading Andrei Markov.
Weaver’s a good shot-blocking defenseman and a decent rental player, though at 5’10 and 180 lbs he’s not a physical presence.
