The Washington Capitals have re-signed defenseman Karl Alzner to a four-year, $11.2 million deal.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Alzner’s new deal is worth an average annual salary of $2.8 million, more than doubling the $1.285 he earned on his entry level contract.
Alzner has developed into a reliable shutdown defenseman for the Capitals, averaging over 22 minutes per game. At 24, his best years lay ahead of him and he should remain a valued member of the Capitals defense corps.
His new contract is a fair, affordable deal, leaving the Capitals with over $5 million in cap space, more than enough to re-sign Marcus Johansson and leave a bit of space for an affordable free agent signing if required.
