TSN reports Logan Couture has reached an agreement on a new contract with the San Jose Sharks. The deal is for five years and worth $30 million.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: As with Pavel Datsyuk’s new contract with the Detroit Red Wings, the Sharks cannot officially announce this deal until July 5th, as Couture has one year remaining on his current contract.
Couture’s new deal is worth an average annual cap hit of $6 million per season, more than double his $2.875 million salary for next season. It’s a significant raise for the 24-year-old center, but with long-time Sharks stars Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau now in their mid-thirties, Couture is becoming the face of the franchise, and is being compensated accordingly.
Getting Couture under contract now is a wise decision, as his value would only increase if they waited until next summer, when he’d also become a tempting target for an offer sheet.
