Various sources report the New Jersey Devils have dealt forward Brian Rolston and a conditional pick in 2012 to the NY Islanders in exchange for Trent Hunter.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: As per Dan Rosen, this move saves the Devils around $3 million in cap space, which they’ll likely put toward re-signing Zach Parise. Rolston, 38, had more more season at $5.062 million cap hit remaining on his contract, and had to agree to waive his “no-trade” clause for this deal to get done. Hunter, 31, has two more seasons at $2 million per left on his contract, and had dropped in the Isles depth chart due to the increase of budding young talent in recent years. Both are coming off lousy seasons, though Rolston’s stats improved when Jacques Lemaire took over the Devils midway through last season as head coach. It remains to be seen how this move impacts the Isles negotiations with Blake Comeau and Alexei Yashin, though it does move them $3 million closer to the cap floor.
