Responses to two separate comments from a Montreal Gazette columnist, need vs want with Sidney Crosby, Yaroslavl Lokomotiv reborn, five crazy things from the NHL leaderboard, Kings GM should choose his next coach carefully, how a hockey blogger turned his hobby into his dream job, and a humorous look at this season’s NHL rookies.
HOCKEY WILDERNESS: “BReynolds” takes umbrage with Montreal Gazette columnist Pat Hickey’s recent tweet regarding a legacy of the late Derek Boogaard.
METRICJULIE: responds to Hickey’s recent column calling Theo Fleury a hypocrite over his response to sexual abuse suffered at the hands of disgraced junior hockey coach Graham James.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hickey’s one of my favorite columnists covering the Canadiens, but I disagree with his recent comments regarding Boogaard and James. Hickey has a right to his opinion, but I don’t share it regarding these two subjects.
THE STRANGEST ONE OF ALL: Scotty Wazz rejects the notion the NHL needs Sidney Crosby to play in order to survive, but rather it wants Crosby to play because of the revenue he generates as their most marketable star.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Spot on, Scotty. I’m a Crosby fan, I won’t deny that, but the NHL has survived the sidelining of major stars before even the premature retirement of some (the most notable being Bobby Orr) and carried on regardless. It would be very sad if Crosby’s career were cut short by concussion, but overall the NHL would survive and find a new star upon which to hang the mantle of poster boy.
PUCK DADDY: Greg Wyshynski writes of how, months after KHL club Yaroslavl Lokomotiv was wiped out in a plane crash, the team is reborn thanks to a combination of youth players from Lokomotiv and loans from other clubs, winning its debut game 5-1.
BACKHAND SHELF: Justin Bourne points out five crazy things from the first page of the NHL leaderboard, including the impressive performance of the ageless Teemu Selanne, and rookie phenom Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Scoring forwards usually aren’t chugging along at a point-per-game pace once they’re on the bad side of 35. What Selanne’s doing at age 41 is incredible.
SURLY & SCRIBE’S LA KINGS BLOG: Having fired Terry Murray as Kings head coach, GM Dean Lombardi had better choose the replacement carefully.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Former Calgary Flames coach and GM Darryl Sutter is reportedly the front runner to replace Murray. So, Lombardi is considering replacing one defensive minded coach with another. And this is supposed to address the Kingswoeful offensive numbers, which is the reason they’ve slid out of the playoff race, how exactly?
SALARY.COM: The story of Joe Yerdon, who turned hockey blogging into his dream job covering the NHL for NBC Sports.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Having also turned blogging about the NHL into a full time career, I certainly relate to Yerdon’s story.
DOWN GOES BROWN: presents a look at this season’s top NHL rookies. Here’s a taste: “Roman Horak, Calgary – After spending the first two months of the season with the Flames, was recently promoted to the AHL.”
