In today’s selection of notable post from the NHL blogosphere: 2011-12 NHL Award predictions…A call for Senators fans to support “Project Mayhem”…Predictions for the Chicago Blackhawks…Rick Nash prepares for the upcoming season…A critique of TSN’s latest player rankings…A poll to choose the Islanders “goal song”…Minimalist hockey posters…Career choices for Sean Avery.
BACKHAND SHELF: Justin Bourne offers up his NHL 2011-12 Award predictions. His Calder Trophy prediction: Zac Dalpe of the Carolina Hurricanes.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Interesting selection. I’ll take Mark Scheifele of the Winnipeg Jets.
SILVER SEVEN: “DarrenM” suggested Senators fans should support “Project Mayhem”, in which NHL fans vote for former Senators to stock the 2012 All-Star Game rosters. Why? Because the All-Star Game is being held in Ottawa this season, in honour of the franchises 20th anniversary.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The idea apparently was the inspiration of a Leafs fan, the motive being to irritate Senators fans by reminding them of how many stars are now playing elsewhere. Yes, it’s kinda evil, but at the same time, if Senators fans embrace the idea, it would be a great way for them to cheer on these players one final time.
SECOND CITY HOCKEY: “McClure” presents a list of predictions for the Chicago Blackhawks. “Ridiculous trade prediction: Mikhail Grabovski becomes a Hawk”.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: There’s also predictions for the rest of the Western Conference and the league.
THE CANNON: “Dan P.” writes Blue Jackets star Rick Nash is all business preparing for the upcoming season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It should be entertaining watching Nash and Jeff Carter play together. Finally, Nash has a teammate as talented as himself.
THE STRANGEST ONE OF ALL: Scotty Wazz of The Face Off Hockey Show critiques TSN’s recent top 50 player rankings, taking issue with Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin being ranked first and second over the Sedins Steven Stamkos, who had better performances last season than those two.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Crosby and Ovechkin had off-seasons, and I believe TSN is expecting Crosby, who was well on his way to a career-best performance when sidelined by a concussion, to continue his strong play when he returns to action, and Ovechkin’s numbers to improve this season. Still, I think Scotty makes a good point. Henrik Sedin, for example, won the Hart and Art Ross trophies in 2010 over a healthier Crosby and Ovechkin’s strong offensive performance that season, yet that gets treated as an aberration, which does a disservice to Sedin.
HOCKEYBUZZ.COM: Dee Karl presents the poll of a list of songs which have been selected for the Islanders new goal song.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’m a fan of Motley Crue, so I gotta go with “Kickstart My Heart”. “Oh! Yeah! Kickstart my heart! Hope it never stops! Oh! Yeah! Baaaaaa-baaayyy!”
PUCK DADDY: Greg Wyshynski presents a link to “minimalist NHL team posters”.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: My favorite is the Florida Panthers poster.
BLEACHER REPORT: Kevin Goff presents a list of potential new careers for Sean Avery.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Missed the most obvious: fashion consultant for Vogue Magazine.
