With the NHL's 2009 Unrestricted Free Agency period starting on July 1st here's the latest on the Sedins, Marian Gaborik, Dany Heatley and Jay Bouwmeester.
TSN.CA: Darren Dreger reports the Sedin twins are facing the reality they might not return with the Vancouver Canucks. Agent JP Barry, who represents the pair, said there's been no progress in contract negotiations with the Canucks. Dreger believes the Twins could command over $7 million each on the open market and named Toronto, Montreal, Los Angeles and Minnesota as potential suitors.
TORONTO SUN: Mike Zeisberger also reports the Canadiens and Maple Leafs could target the twins if they hit the UFA market on Wednesday.
VANCOUVER SUN: Iain MacIntyre reports Canucks GM Mike Gillis "could have some explaining to do" if the Sedins leave. MacIntyre believes Mike Cammalleri would top Gillis' UFA shopping list should he fail to re-sign the Sedins, but the columnist doubts Gillis will sign Marian Gaborik unless the oft-injured winger is willing to accept an affordable one-year contract to re-establish himself as a star. MacIntyre also points out Gillis, a former player agent, apparently has feuded with Gaborik's agent Ron Salcer after former NHL star Pavel Bure replaced Salcer with Gillis.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: The Sedins will be the most pursued forwards in this summer's market should the Canucks fail to re-sign them, while Gaborik is likely facing offers of one-two years should he test the market on July 1st.
OTTAWA SUN: Don Brennan reports it'll be interesting to see what Dany Heatley does if the Senators are unable to find any takers for him via trade. Senators GM Bryan Murray attempted to deal Heatley at the entry draft but his high asking price attracted little interest.
OTTAWA CITIZEN: Allen Panzeri reports an unnamed NHL executive said during the draft the reason Murray hadn't received any offers for Heatley was that no one wanted the winger. Panzeri noted Heatley's expensive $7.5 million contract is difficult to move, especially when teams might be able to sign quality wingers for less via free agency.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: The $4 million bonus Heatley is owed on July 1st is perhaps the biggest trade obstacle. Following July 1st when most or all of the top wingers have been signed there should be more interest in Heatley, especially since interested parties wouldn't have to take on that bonus.
CALGARY SUN: Randy Sportak reports Jay Bouwmeester's agent dismissed an internet rumor claiming the Flames had a multi-year contract worth $6.3 million per season in place for the defenseman, saying they hadn't even begun talking contract yet with the club. Sportak believes talks will begin today.
EDMONTON SUN: Terry Jones wonders if the Flames acquisition of Bouwmeester's rights and their attempt to sign him isn't a gambit to keep the blueliner, an Edmonton native, out of the clutches of the Oilers.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: I just don't the reason why the Oilers, who already have three expensive puck-moving blueliners in Tom Gilbert, Lubomir Visnosky and Sheldon Souray, would pursue Bouwmeester, especially when they need a quality starting goaltender and a scorer for Ales Hemsky's line.

If the reports are accurate as to why he wants out of Ottawa, then I\'ve lost a lot of respect for him. However, this "prima donna" act does not take away from what he has done on the ice in the past and what he can do in the future.
