Now that Dany Heatley's rejected a trade to Edmonton what's next for he and the Senators? Read on for the latest on this strange saga.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Dany Heatley's unwillingness to waive his no-movement clause to faciliate a trade to Edmonton will likely kill the proposed four-player deal between the two clubs. It's believed the Heatley camp was hoping the Senators could arrange a trade to the NY Rangers but with their signing last night of Marian Gaborik they're out of the market.

EDMONTON SUN: Robert Tychkowski reports it's an uncomfortable time for Oilers Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner and Ladislav Smid. They're the players that were to be the return to the Senators for Heatley and now their futures with the club could be in limbo in the wake of Heatley rejecting the trade.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Allen Panzeri reports Heatley is refusing to budge from being dealt to his preferred destinations, of which the Oilers were not on that list, while Wayne Scanlan believes Heatley's grand plan has failed miserably as the number of clubs on his wish list has shrunk significantly as some of those clubs have filled their needs via free agency.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: This situation is getting uglier by the day. I know Heatley has the right due to his movement clause to determine where he wants to go but it appears those clubs, including the Kings and Sharks, might not be willing to pony up the expensive asking price. The Oilers may not have been on Heatley's list but they were keen to acquire him. Edmonton may not be as glamorous as San Jose, Los Angeles or New York but it's a great hockey town with a very good team, one he could turn into a playoff contender. Heatley's hoping to hold out for a better destination but it could end up doing him more harm than good. I daresay the Oilers are no longer interested in him but now they've got three players who know they were close to being traded and that's not going to make them particularly happy campers.

If I was Murray, I\'d go find the Canadian version of Luca Brasi to pay Danny-boy a visit. I kind of wanted him in L.A., but now I\'m starting to question his motives.

On a side note, as a Kings\' season ticket holder, I\'m so glad Lombardi didn\'t offer the crazy contract lengths that were given yesterday. I was hoping Lombardi would sign somebody big, but Gaborik for 5 years at $7.5M is absolutely insane, as is Hossa\'s 12 year deal. I\'d much rather give Schenn a shot to crack the lineup.

WHY CAN\'T OTTAWA BE LIKE THE PANTHERS AND LET THE KINGS TRADE 1 PLAYER PERHAPS JJ AND A DRAFT PICK LIKE FLORIDA DID WITH JAY B.

Dany Heatley wanted his megacontract and iron clad security; Bryan Murray wanted to \'lock up the core\'. Both men are now handcuffed...to each other.

IMHO the question now will be which one of them backs down first. Will Murray take less than what he deems \'fair value\'?
Or will Heatley accept a trade to a team not on his \'wish list\'?

No one wins.

...especially Ottawa Senators fans.

Heatley and the Senators now both have a PR battle in front of them. If you look San Jose up on NHL numbers, they don\'t really have the players to give in return for Heatley. Thornton is has two years left on his contract and Marleau one until they become UFA. Chances are, what San Jose offered Bryan Murray was probably what Murray deemed as insulting (though Murray isn\'t the best GM out there in terms of trading; either he overestimates a player or underestimates him; look what he gave up Joe Corvo for).

LA isn\'t dumb enough to give up both the top tier forward Dustin Brown has become, and the top tier defense Jack Johnson is/can be. Murray doesn\'t exactly give them a desperate situation to trade either. Now that the Rangers have signed Gaborik, the Kings know, because of Heatley\'s ignorant camp (Barry and McAlpine?), that they\'re the only team in play right now.

The next step is for Heatley\'s camp to admit fault, which the agents absolutely won\'t do. Heatley himself needs to apologize to the fans out there for his error. Following in the footsteps of successful public requests, though, like Ray Bourque or Chris Pronger (both dealt to Cup Winning teams), he\'ll find it hard to put himself at fault. However, he\'s not going to get dealt, I think he forgot who his GM was (!I\'ll trade you Heatley for your two best players under longterm contract or RFA status!). Just who did Edmonton get for Pronger anyway? Three years out of the playoffs? Boston for Bourque? A long time of never seeing May hockey. That\'s whom you hurt when you make your trade demands public.

For that Heatley should be sorry, and suit up as a Senator. After that, PR shifts to Murray, where he has to tell the Sens fans to forgive the guy.

this mess could drag on for some time and might affect the next CBA. the next item on the owners agenda has to be Guaranteed contracts and that will hurt the players big time. simply put if a player has a bad year or starts to slow down in productivity the team simply drops him and signs someone else.
