Are the Habs interested in Alex Frolov? Could Dany Heatley being heading to San Jose? Are the Red Wings close to signing Jason Williams? Read on for the details.

SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS: Mark Purdy reports Ottawa Senators winger Dany Heatley doesn't appear to fit in Sharks GM Doug Wilson's preference for first line players who don't make waves but that apparently hasn't stopped him from lobbing some trade bait toward Ottawa. Purdy offers up some evidence, including Heatley's potential preference to play in San Jose, as to why Wilson might be willing to take on Heatley. He also reports Wilson still remains unhappy over his club's poor performance in this spring's playoffs.

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Senators GM Bryan Murray confirmed he has "an option" to move Heatley but he'd have to move quickly with the start of training camp only six weeks away. Garrioch cites sources claiming the Sharks have more than a passing interest in Heatley but would have to involve a third team - possibly the Montreal Canadiens - to get a deal done. It should be noted all three teams are close to the salary cap for this coming season.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Hat tip to GJ Berg for the Mercury news link. Three way deals rarely happen in the NHL, even less so in today's salary cap world, and it remains to be seen what the Habs could offer up that would facilitate such a deal. The Sharks would have to dump around $8 million in cap space to comfortably absorb Heatley's salary. For the Canadiens to get involved they'd want a physical scoring center as they lack size up front, particularly at center. The obvious assumption for rumor mongers is Patrick Marleau, who's been linked to the Habs since 2007, but he's in a contract year, currently has a no-trade clause, has given no indication he wants to leave San Jose, and if he were probably doesn't want any part of the fishbowl existence of being a Hab.

HOCKEY30.COM: recently reported of speculation in the Quebec media, notably TEAM CKAC 990, the Montreal Canadiens are interested in LA Kings winger Alex Frolov.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Frolov is a left winger and the Habs already have depth there in the recently signed Mike Cammalleri and Andrei Kostitsyn. Can't see the Kings wanting the latter in return. UPDATE: I've since been informed by two reliable sources that this rumor is baseless. I apologize for any confusion it may have caused.

WINDSOR STAR: Dave Waddell recently reported the Red Wings have made a one-year contract offer to Jason Williams but neither side appears in a rush to consummate the deal. Williams apparently hasn't gotten back to the Wings yet as he examines other options while the Wings are looking elsewhere.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Conflicting reports about Williams signing with the Wings have been flying about of late. A couple of days ago it appeared almost a certainty but the longer he goes unsigned the greater the speculation the Wings could look at someone else. Hopefully the club will clarify things this week with a signing.

WASHINGTON TIMES: Stephen Whyno reports the Capitals recent signing of defenseman Milan Jurcina leaves the club with ten defensemen and facing a decision over which to retain. Jurcina's signing puts the Capitals over the cap by $2.1 million.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Expect either a cost-cutting trade or demotions prior to the start of the season for the Capitals.
