Latest on Marc Savard, Alex Frolov, Anton Volchenkov and more.
CBC.CA: Elliotte Friedman yesterday reported the salary cap could make it difficult for the Boston Bruins to re-sign center Marc Savard, who's eligible for UFA status next summer, suggesting the Toronto Maple Leafs might be keen to reunite Savard with former linemate Phil Kessel if the former is unsigned by July 1st.SPECTOR'S NOTE: I don't doubt Burke would be very interested in signing Savard but I also believe Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli will do everything he can to get Savard, the linchpin of the Bruins offense, re-signed before July 1st.
SPORTING NEWS: yesterday reported it'll be interesting to see how LA Kings forward Alex Frolov responds to being benched for his recent poor play. The report also noted this is how trade rumors get started, noting a report out of Edmonton claiming the Oilers might be interested in Frolov.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Frolov is an unrestricted free agent next summer and there's considerable speculation the Kings could shop him later in the season. For now however I don't expect they'll make such a drastic move, hoping Frolov will snap out of his malaise.
OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports Senators GM Bryan Murray will work on re-signing hard-hitting defenseman Anton Volchenkov, who's currently in the final year of a contract paying him $2.5 million per season.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Volchenkov is eligible for UFA status next summer but I expect Murray will get him re-signed before then, although it could be a bit dicey given the Senators already have over $48 million committed to 14 players for next season. Still, he's the most notable Senator to be re-signed and unless Volchenkov has a hankering to play elsewhere it shouldn't be that difficult for Murray to get him signed.
USATODAY.COM: Kevin Allen yesterday reported on several goaltenders who might become trade targets later in the season. He lists Atlanta's Kari Lehtonen, Anaheim's J.S. Giguere, either Martin Biron or Dwayne Roloson of the Islanders, or Vancouver's Cory Schneider. Allen also cites potential UFAs like Dallas' Marty Turco, San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov, St. Louis' Chris Mason and Nashville's Pekka Rinne could be shopped closer to the trade deadline depending on how the season unfolds for those respective teams, but believes they'll most likely be re-signed.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Allen isn't saying for certain those players will be moved, only listing them as trade possibilities depending on how the season unfolds. Of this list I'd say the more likely to be dealt are Lehtonen and Biron. Ondrej Pavelec has been outstanding between the pipes thus far filling in for the injured Lehtonen, while Biron is in my opinion more marketable than Roloson due to age and salary.
NEWSDAY: Steve Zipay reports former Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mathieu Dandenault has a tryout deal with NY Rangers farm team in Hartford. Zipay suggests if Dandenault is successful he could become a seventh d-man for the Rangers.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Dandenault's versatility (he can also play on the wing) could make him a worthwhile addition for the Blueshirts.
