Latest from the Ottawa Sun and ESPN.com.
OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the following:
- It's believed the Detroit Red Wings could be looking for a goalie with Chris Osgood and Jimmy Howard struggling but there aren't many options. The NY Islanders could move Martin Biron if Rick DiPietro gets healthy.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Much will depend on Osgood's performance in the coming weeks. If the Wings are interested in Biron they could have competition from other clubs seeking goaltending depth, including the Buffalo Sabres, Biron's former team.
- The Tampa Bay Lightning are rumored trying to move defenseman Andrej Meszaros but they'll have a hard time moving his $4 million salary.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: There's a rumor the Oilers are scouting the Lightning perhaps for a defenseman but they'd have to free up cap space if they were interested in Meszaros.
- Garrioch claims he's heard of talk Dallas Stars GM Joe Nieuwendyk is "sniffing around" for a big forward. Garrioch believes he'll do "quite a lot of talking" with Toronto.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Matt Stajan and Alex Ponikarovsky have been rumored as possible trade bait later this season by the Leafs. So far there's been no word in the Dallas media of Nieuwendyk shopping for a big forward.
- Garrioch dismissed rumors of the Hurricanes shopping Ray Whitney citing his "no-movement" clause, suggesting instead defenseman Joe Corvo, a UFA at season's end, might be offered to teams seeking power-play help.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Corvo's $2.75 million salary could also be difficult to move at this point in the season.
- "Three league executives" claim the Florida Panthers are trying to move forward Nathan Horton despite GM Randy Sexton's denials. It's also believed Sexton wouldn't mind moving forward Rostislav Olesz. Garrioch suggests the Leafs could be a possibility for Horton but the Panthers would have to accept Jason Blake in return.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: No offense to Garrioch but Sexton's comments carry more weight than those of unnamed league executives. If the Panthers were to shop Horton they certainly wouldn't want Jason Blake in return. Horton's been playing better of late which would increase his trade value but also makes it more unlikely the Panthers would be trying to move him. Horton's contract also makes him difficult to deal at this time.
- The Oilers, concerned about falling out of a playoff berth, could make a "panic move" for a forward. GM Steve Tambellini is believed shopping around for a deal.
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Injuries and the flu have taken a toll on the Oilers roster but I doubt Tambellini makes "a panic move".
ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun reports Peter Forsberg intends to chat with his agent after the Karjala Cup to discuss either a return to the NHL, playing in Europe/Russia or retirement. There's been no contract talks with NHL teams, just some calling to express interest. The Canucks and Rangers have publicly done so while sources claim Boston and Philadelphia might be interested, while Edmonton and Los Angeles would be considered as "Maybes".
SPECTOR'S NOTE: Much will depend of course on how much Forsberg would seek on a one-year contract if he hopes to return to the NHL.
-Once Rick DiPietro returns healthy to the NY Islanders (he's believed about two weeks away from returning) they'll shop Martin Biron as they're getting plenty of interest in Biron and won't have a tough time moving him.
