ESPN.COM: Craig Custance reports on the impact John Tavares’ season-ending knee injury could have upon the New York Islanders and their fading playoff hopes.  Custance believes GM Garth Snow must go into “sell mode” leading up to the March 5 trade deadline. Winger Thomas Vanek and defenseman Andrew MacDonald are considered the prime trade candidates. Both are unrestricted free agents this summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s all but certain Vanek and MacDonald will be moved at the trade deadline. Vanek has already stated his intent to test this summer’s free agent market, while MacDonald’s rumored asking price ($5 million per season) is more than the Isles are willing to pay. Vanek’s been linked to the LA Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins, while the Boston Bruins are rumored to have interest in MacDonald.

CSNBAYAREA.COM: Kevin Kurz isn’t expecting a major move by the San Jose Sharks at the trade deadline, as they’re “a virtual lock” to clinch a playoff berth. GM Doug Wilson pointed out injured Sharks Logan Couture and Raffi Torres are set to return following the Olympic break. The club also has limited cap space to take on additional salary, meaning any acquisitions would have to be almost dollar-for-dollar.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Hat tip to GJ Berg for the link. If Wilson does make a move it’ll be an affordable minor deal.
