It’s only a matter of time until the Blue Jackets move Jeff Carter, Wild fans shouldn’t expect their team to land Zach Parise at the trade deadline, Red Wings GM Ken Holland keeping an eye on the trade market, and it’s time for the Canadiens to go into “sell” mode.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Michael Arace reports it’s only a matter of time until the Blue Jackets trade center Jeff Carter, claiming the “worst kept secret in the NHL” is Carter will be moved by the trade deadline, though he has not publicly demanded a trade and the Blue Jackets have made no proclamation the center is available.
CALGARY SUN: Eric Francis reports Carter’s agent said his client doesn’t have a ‘no-trade’ clause, as it was nullified when he was dealt to the Blue Jackets by the Flyers last summer. It was supposed to take effect on July 1st, 2012, but because Carter was dealt before his 27th birthday (the age of eligibility for UFA status), the clause “didn’t travel” with Carter.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The lack of a “no-trade” clause means the Blue Jackets won’t have to worry about trying to move him before July 1st. That means if they don’t find a deal to their liking by the February 27th trade deadline, or at the June entry draft, they can take their time and shop for a deal after July 1st, with the ability to send him to any team without Carter’s permission.
STARTRIBUNE.COM: Michael Russo reports Minnesota Wild fans shouldn’t get their hopes up expecting their club to land New Jersey Devils captain Zach Parise at the trade deadline, suggesting the best opportunity for the Wild to get him is if Parise becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Even then, Wild fans shouldn’t assume it’s a done deal, as Parise has suggested he’d want to play for a Cup contender, something the Wild haven’t been this season, and don’t appear close to becoming anytime soon.
DETROIT FREE PRESS: Helene St. James reports Red Wings GM Ken Holland has had some trade talks with teams, but said he likes the current makeup of his team, which should dispel speculation he might shop pending UFAs like Brad Stuart.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I still expect Holland will make a move or two at the deadline, likely to bolster his depth at forward, but it’s obvious he’s not feeling any pressure to make a deal.
RDS.CA: Luc Gelina believes this miserable week for the Canadiens (losers of three straight games since the All-Star break, dropping the Habs into dead last in the Eastern Conference) should convince GM Pierre Gauthier his team’s playoff hopes are dashed, and it’s time to go into “sell” mode by the trade deadline. Pending UFAs Travis Moen, Hal Gill, Chris Campoli and Andrei Kostitsyn could be trade bait in the coming weeks.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Stick a fork in the Canadiens, they’re done. Time to ship out those veterans you have no intention of re-signing. Just don’t get stupid and shop quality players like Carey Price, P.K Subban, Tomas Plekanec, Max Pacioretty, David Desharnais, Josh Gorges, Erik Cole, and Lars Eller, or promising young ones like Louis Leblanc, Alexei Emelin and Raphael Dial. Those are the guys around which to rebuild. Everyone else (yes, even Brian Gionta) should be available.
