The NY Rangers continue to seek a defenseman…the latest on Sean Avery…Zach Parise talks once again about his future…Anton Stralman not on the Devils roster.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reported the Rangers have re-opened talks with former Ranger defenseman Paul Mara as they continue to seek additional depth in case Marc Staal, who’s suffering from post-concussion symptoms, remains sidelined longer than expected. There’s no timetable for Staal’s return, but GM Glen Sather hinted it could be long-term.

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS/NEW YORK POST: reported on the status of forward Sean Avery, who cleared waivers and returned home from Europe yesterday. Avery’s agent said the winger has received interest from several European teams, but he’s willing to play wherever the Rangers want him. GM Glen Sather suggested it was possible Avery could play his way back onto the Rangers lineup if he should agree to report to their AHL team.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Do the Rangers really want Avery with their AHL team? Sure, he’s handled the current situation well, but how long can he hold his tongue if he’s riding the buses in the minors?  I still think he’ll end up loaned to a European team, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

Staying put in New Jersey?

NEW YORK POST: Mark Everson asked Devils forward Zach Parise if being named the club’s captain encouraged him to remain with the club. “Yes,” he said. “I don’t know how many times I have to say it. I like it here, and I want to stay here.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: A lot of folks look at the one-year contract he signed with the Devils as proof he’ll depart next summer via free agency, but that was mutually agreed upon by both sides to allow more time to work out a longer-term deal. I’ll be very surprised if Parise isn’t re-signed before next summer, and I certainly don’t expect him to be traded this season, regardless of where the Devils finish in the standings.

NJ.COM: Rich Chere reports the Devils submitted their 23-man roster but defenseman Anton Stralman wasn’t on it. Stralman attended the Devils training camp on a tryout basis, and could be allowed to stay around a few day while unsigned. GM Lou Lamoriello claimed he’s still talking with Stralman’s agent but no decision has yet been made.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Devils have around $4.6 million in available cap space so money probably isn’t the issue here.
