NBC Sports, citing ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun, reports the Tampa Bay Lightning have re-signed right wing Ryan Callahan to a six-year, $34.8 million contract. Callahan was eligible for UFA status in July.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That works out to $5. 8 million per season, which is less than the six-year, $39 million he sought from the NY Rangers before he was dealt to the Lightning.
On the one hand, Callahan brings considerable two-way skills, experienced and leadership to a young Lightning team, helping captain Steven Stamkos carry the leadership burden.
On the other hand, Callahan’s physical style means he’s often sidelined. Approaching his thirties, that could become an issue in the coming years.
