The St. Louis Blues announced they’ve traded goaltender Jaroslav Halak, right wing Chris Stewart, prospect William Carrier, a first-round pick in 2015 and a third-round pick in 2o16 to the Buffalo Sabres for goaltender Ryan Miller and forward Steve Ott.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Our first blockbuster of the season. It’s obvious the Blues are going for it this season by acquiring Miller and Ott, who are also pending unrestricted free agents. Miller is still considered among the NHL’s best goaltenders, while Ott is a versatile, gritty winger. Both should fit well, at least in the short term, with the Blues. It remains to be seen if they’ll remain with the Blues beyond this season.

As for the Sabres, they get a veteran goalie in Halak to at least tide them over until season’s end, after which they can decide if they wish to re-sign him. It’s also a bit of a gamble, as Halak is also eligible for UFA status and could depart in the off-season. They do get a good winger in Stewart, who’s signed through next season, plus some pieces to build for the future.

In the short term, or at least this season, this deal favors the Blues. Time will tell how this works out for the Sabres.
