Canadiens file for arbitration with Carey Price, Brian Burke facing his most important days as Leafs GM, updates on the Jets talks with Kane and Pavelec, and the latest on the Oilers, Flames and Senators.
TSN/SPORTSNET: The Montreal Canadiens have filed for salary arbitration with RFA goalie Carey Price. Nick Kypreos reports Habs could sign Price to a one-or two-year arbitration contract if he turns down a long-term deal believed worth in the $40 million range.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some Canadiens fans freaked out over the news of the Habs filing for arbitration with Price. One word to those nervous nellies: RELAX! This is actually a smart procedural move by new GM Marc Bergevin to ensure he covers all his bases with Price. While it’s highly unlikely Price would’ve received an offer sheet this summer, it was better to be safe than sorry. A source informed me Price’s new deal could be seven years and around $6 million per, which would fit into what Kypreos reported of a $40 million deal. I’ve also heard negotiations between the two sides are going well, though there’s no word if a deal is imminent. I expect the Habs will get Price re-signed before this goes to arbitration.
CANOE.CA: Steve Simmons reports this summer could be the most crucial one of Brian Burke’s tenure as Leafs GM. After over three years on the job, the Leafs are no better than they were when he took over, and pressure is mounting from fans and media to turn things around.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Burke needs to address his goaltending and depth at center, the club’s two major problem areas. If the moves he makes this summer fails to put the Leafs into the playoffs next season, I expect he’ll be unemployed by this time next year.
WINNIPEG SUN: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff claims contract talks with RFAs Ondrej Pavelec and Evander Kane are ongoing and he remains optimistic over working out deals for the pair.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I believe they shouldn’t have much difficulty getting Kane under contract. Pavelec, on the other hand, could be a different story, especially if, as rumored, he’s seeking $4 million per season.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Nail Yakupov and Ryan Murray are believed on the Oilers short list of selections with their first overall pick.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: My guess is they’ll pick Yakupov, and perhaps try to package their second round pick with a roster player for a defenseman.
CALGARY SUN: Eric Francis on the necessity for Flames GM Jay Feaster to make a “big deal” at this year’s draft.
OTTAWA CITIZEN: Wayne Scanlan looks back on how the Senators moved toward drafting more Swedish players.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: No, I haven’t forgotten the Vancouver Canucks. All the focus is currently upon trading Roberto Luongo, and you can get the details on that in my “Rumors” section.
