An in-depth look at Leafs star Phil Kessel…P.K. Subban the target of a racial slur…Olli Jokinen plays his 1,000th NHL game…Bobby Butler the shootout hero for Senators…Canucks fall to the Kings…Oilers drop seventh straight…Jets shoot down the Leafs.
THE GLOBE AND MAIL: James Mirtle looks at the career of Toronto Maple Leafs scoring star Phil Kessel.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: This appeared in the Globe and Mail on December 30th. My apologies for not seeing this sooner. Great piece by Mirtle.
CANOE.CA: Montreal Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban was apparently the target of a racial slur by Florida Panthers enforce Krys Barch during the Habs 3-2 loss to the Panthers on Saturday. Subban claimed he never heard the slur, but a linesman overhead it and ejected Barch.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s now up to the league to decide if there will be supplemental discipline. If Barch said what the linesman claimed he said, this could result in a suspension.
CALGARY HERALD: Flames center Olli Jokinen played in his 1, 000th NHL game against Nashville on Saturday.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Jokinen downplayed the achievement prior to the game, but it’s obviously a significant milestone.
OTTAWA SUN: Bobby Butler was the shootout hero for the Senators, scoring the winning goal as the Sens downed the Buffalo Sabres 3-2.
VANCOUVER SUN: The Canucks dropped a listless 4-1 decision to the Los Angeles Kings.
EDMONTON JOURNAL:The Oilers lost their seventh straight road game, falling to the NY Islanders 4-1.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like another mid-season anticipating which players the Oilers will trade by the deadline. Bye bye, Hemsky.
WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets downed the Maple Leafs 3-2 in the latter’s first visit to Winnipeg this season. The loss knocked the Maple Leafs out of a playoff position, vaulting the Jets to seventh overall.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Looks like my pre-season prediction of the Jets becoming a playoff contender may be coming true.
