Former Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke to hold a press conference today in Toronto, the latest on Erik Cole, Erik Karlsson, Ales Hemsky, Sven Baertschi and Zack Kassian, and a draft of the Jets schedule has been leaked.
TORONTO SUN: All eyes and ears will be upon the Air Canada Centre in Toronto today, as former Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke will hold a press conference at noon ET today.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: So much for the theory the Leafs retained Burke as a “senior advisor” to buy his silence on his firing. Should be interesting to hear what he has to say. Expect full coverage in Canada on TSN and Sportsnet. Perhaps NHL.com might carry it as well.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: Canadiens forward Erik Cole, unhappy over the new NHL CBA, hints this season might be his last as an NHL player.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: There’s 9 million reasons (roughly what remains of Cole’s contract for this season, plus the remaining salary over the next two years, taking into account possible escrow clawbacks) why I don’t believe Cole will follow through with that threat.
OTTAWA SUN: Senators defenseman and defending Norris Trophy holder Erik Karlsson hasn’t let his new, expensive contract change his attitude.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Karlsson will face considerable pressure this season to match or best his Norris-winning performance of last season.
EDMONTON SUN: Ales Hemsky rejoins the Oilers hoping to maintain the hot offensive pace he had playing in the Czech Extraliga during the lockout.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: There’s a big difference between NHL and Czech Extraliga. Still, if Hemsky can stay healthy and regain the 70-point touch of the past (though he won’t reach that number in a 48-game schedule), the Oilers will be happy with that.
CALGARY SUN: Flames veterans can see the potential of promising young forward Sven Baertschi.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Zack Kassian’s maturation will determine if he has a roster spot with the Canucks this season.
WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: A draft of the Jets upcoming schedule has been leaked.
