The latest on Nikolai Kulemin and Chris Mason, the Oilers and Flames have more work to do, the scouting report on the Senators recent draft picks, and more praise for the work of new Canadiens management at this year’s draft.
TORONTO SUN: Contract talks between the Maple Leafs and RFA winger Nikolai Kulemin “could get testy”, though he wants to remain a Maple Leaf.
WINNIPEG SUN: Pending UFA goaltender Chris Mason is hoping to get a new deal done with the Jets and avoid free agency. He acknowledged that could depend in part upon the club’s contract talks with RFA goalie Ondrej Pavelec.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: If Pavelec is traded or heads to Russia, a tandem of Mason and recently acquired Jonas Gustavsson wouldn’t be an improvement over this season’s pairing of Pavelec and Mason.
EDMONTON SUN: The Oilers management still has work to do, as they seek “another big, steady defenceman (somebody like Matt Greene), another puck moving defenceman (along the lines of Tom Gilbert) and some front-line muscle to complement the grit they don’t have.”
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The blueline is their priority. Wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to trade for Chicago’s Niklas Hjalmarsson or tried to sign UFA Justin Schultz.
CALGARY HERALD: Re-signing his key free agents is the latest priority for Flames GM Jay Feaster.
OTTAWA SUN: The scouting report on the Senators draft picks this weekend.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: More praise for the work of Canadiens rookie GM Marc Bergevin and his staff at this past weekend’s entry draft.
The latest Vancouver Canucks news concerns efforts to trade Roberto Luongo. Those reports can found in the “Rumors” section.
