A reason why the Senators are pursuing Rick Nash, the Jets turn to re-signing Evander Kane, James van Riemsdyk reaction to his trade to Toronto, the Flames hope to re-sign Blake Comeau, plus the latest on the Canucks, Oilers and Canadiens.

OTTAWA CITIZEN: Wayne Scanlan suggested acquiring Rick Nash would make sense for the Senators if captain Daniel Alfredsson were to retire.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: But could Nash fill the void which would be left by the departed, beloved Alfredsson?

Jets putting focus on getting Kane re-signed.

WINNIPEG SUN: With Ondrej Pavelec under contract, the Jets management shifts its focus to re-signing RFA winger Evander Kane.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Jets GM Kevin Chevelayoff overcame what appeared to be a difficult situation by getting Pavelec under contract. I expect he’ll do the same with Kane, whose talks might not be contentious as some Jets followers fear.

SPORTSNET.CA: New Maple Leafs James van Riemsdyk’s Twitter account saw a significant spike after he was dealt to Toronto. van Riemsdyk said he’s looking forward to joining the Leafs next season, adding he wasn’t surprised by the trade after being linked to the Leafs in rumors this season.

CALGARY HERALD: The Flames didn’t send a qualifying offer to forward Blake Comeau, but remain interested in re-signing him to a new contract.

VANCOUVER SUN: The Canucks didn’t qualify the right of RFA defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani, whom they acquired at the trade deadline as part of the return for shipping Cody Hodgson to Buffalo.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Canucks management are giving up rather quickly on Gragnani, who was considered a promising young defenseman. Perhaps Gragnani wasn’t as good as touted, andif so, that doesn’t speak well of how the Canucks front office evaluates talent. If Gragnani goes on to fulfill his promise elsewhere, it could make them look worse.

EDMONTON JOURNAL: The Oilers have cut ties with defenseman Cam Barker, as they didn’t send him a qualifying offer.

CANOE.CA; Frederic St. Denis is focused upon making the Montreal Canadiens lineup next season.
