may be ready to announce hire new GM, PK Subban returns from Worlds, Daniel Alfredsson to return to Senators in some capacity, Jay Bouwmeester a winner in international hockey, more on Alexander Burmistrov, and Wayne Gretzky denies a rumor he might get involved with the club.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE/RDS.CA: reports a source claims the Montreal Canadiens will announce the hiring of Chicago Blackhawks assistant GM Marc Bergevin as their new general manager, selected over former Avalanche GM Francois Giguere, NBC hockey analyst Pierre McGuire and Lightning assistant GM Julien Brisebois. If true, I consider this a good choice by the Habs. While Brisebois would’ve been my choice, Bergevin is also an experienced hockey man, most notably with a recent background in management with a successful team.
**UPDATE** Various sources now confirm Bergevin has indeed been hired as the Canadiens new GM. An official announcement is expected from the Canadiens later today.
CANOE.CA: Canadiens defenseman P.K. Subban has returned to Montreal from the World Hockey Championships having suffered a minor knee injury in an exhibition game, and is expected to be reevaluated in two weeks. Subban took to Twitter last night to calm Habs fans, reiterating it was a minor injury and nothing to worry about.
OTTAWA SUN: If Daniel Alfredsson doesn’t return for another season as team captain, he’ll return in some capacity in the front office or behind the bench.
CALGARY SUN: Flames defenseman Jay Bouwmeester may not have any NHL playoff experience, but he’s had plenty of international experience in championship games, including winning gold medals in the World Hockey Championships, and in the last World Cup of Hockey.
WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Ed Tait believes Alexander Burmistrov won’t be playing in Russia next season, but instead could find himself with the Jets farm team in St. John’s.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Wayne Gretzky denied a rumor he might be joining the Canucks in some capacity after he was seen having dinner with Canucks owner Francesco Aquilini a couple of weeks ago.
