NBC SPORTS PRO HOCKEY TALK: cited a “tweet” from TSN’s Darren Dreger claiming the Sedin twins and Canucks management will get down to negotiating new contracts today. The Sedins are eligible to become UFAs next summer.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Both sides appear keen to get a deal done, with an eye on having new contracts in place by the season-opener next month.

No captaincy for Karlsson.

No captaincy for Karlsson.

OTTAWA SUN: Senators coach Paul MacLean ruled out Erik Karlsson as a candidate for the team captaincy, suggesting at this stage in Karlsson’s career it’s a little too early.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s widely assumed Jason Spezza will be the next Senators captain.

TORONTO STAR: Damien Cox speculates defenseman Jake Gardiner could be next summer’s version of Nazem Kadri for the Maple Leafs.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: That’ll depend on Gardiner’s performance and the Leafs cap space next summer. The good news is, if the cap increases as expected to $70 million, the Leafs will have $35 million in cap space. Re-signing or replacing notables like Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf and James Reimer could take a big bite out of that cap space, but should leave enough (barring pursuit of more expensive UFAs next summer) for Gardiner.

CALGARY HERALD/CALGARY SUN: George Johnson makes the case for Mark Giordano as the next captain of the Calgary Flames. Randy Sportak reports Giordano has Mike Cammalleri’s vote.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Giordano seems the best choice to captain the rebuilding Flames.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens “Gallys” – Brendan Gallagher and Alexander Galchenyuk – are confident they’ll avoid the dreaded “sophomore slump”.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If they do, it’l provide a significant boost to the Canadiens playoff hopes.

EDMONTON JOURNAL/EDMONTON SUN: Denis Grebeshkov and Linus Omark are making their returns to the Oilers.

WINNIPEG SUN: Jets coach Claude Noel wants his club to get tougher this season.
