The effect of Joe Colborne’s arrival for the Flames, Jannik Hansen pleased with his new contract, Oilers name Andrew Ference their new captain, Morgan Rielly to open the season with the Leafs, and more.
CALGARY HERALD/CALGARY SUN: Calgary native Joe Colborne called the weekend trade which shipped him from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Flames a “dream come true”. His arrival, however, could affect top prospect Sean Monahan’s hopes of cracking the roster this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Colborne provides the rebuilding Flames with another center with some NHL experience, which could result in Monahan being returned to his junior club this season.
VANCOUVER SUN/VANCOUVER PROVINCE: Canucks winger Jannik Hansen called his new four-year, $10 million contract “exactly what I wanted”. The Canucks acquisitions of centers Zac Dalpe and Jeremy Welsh resulted in prospect center Bo Horvat being returned to his junior club. Fellow prospect Hunter Shinkaruk could also be returned to junior when the club makes its final cuts today.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: The Oilers names defenseman Andrew Ference their new captain. Ference signed with the Oilers this summer as an unrestricted free agent.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Oilers coaching staff and management obviously felt Ference’s experience gave him the edge over younger Oilers Jordan Eberle and Taylor Hall.
TORONTO STAR: Youngsters Morgan Rielly and Carter Ashton may survive the Maple Leafs final cuts today.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Rielly had a strong camp, and the club’s anticipated demotion of John-Michael Liles opens up a roster spot for the young blueliner.
WINNIPEG SUN: The Jets are expected to demote defenseman Zach Redmond today.
OTTAWA SUN: The Senators dropped both their split-squad games to the New York Islanders.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: The Canadiens are working on their special team play.
