Jaromir Jagr flirts with the Canadiens again, a call for Jason Spezza to become the new Senators captain, Dion Phaneuf gets married, six center the Calgary Flames should pursue, plus updates on the Canucks, Jets and Oilers.
TVASPORTS: Louis-Andre Lariviere reports Jaromir Jagr’s agent, Petr Svoboda, claims his client has always wanted to play in Montreal. Jagr is an unrestricted free agent and is currently seeking a one-year contract.
SPECTOR’ S NOTE: Jagr to Montreal would be a great idea…five years ago. Yes, I know, he’ll be reunited with his Czech league linemate Tomas Plekanec, but with all due respect, playing in that league isn’t the same as playing in the NHL. Jagr’s clearly slowed, and I don’t believe he is a good fit for the Habs over an 82-game schedule. Jagr in his prime was one of the greatest players I ever saw and I have lots of respect for his career accomplishments, but he’s not that great player anymore. Signing him now in hopes for glimpses of “the old magic” won’t address the Canadiens needs.
OTTAWA SUN: Don Brennan makes the case for Jason Spezza to become the next captain of the Senators.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I daresay the club’s management and coaching staff feels the same way.
TORONTO STAR: Rosie DiManno with lengthy coverage of Dion Phaneuf’s marriage to Elisha Cuthbert.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Yes, I noted their wedding yesterday as well, but it makes a nice break from all the chatter over how the Leafs overpaid for David Clarkson and Tyler Bozak and the debate over how Leafs coach Randy Carlyle managed/mismanaged Mikhail Grabovski’s ice time.
CALGARY SUN: Randy Sportak lists Chicago’s Marcus Kruger, Colorado’s Paul Stastny, St. Louis’ David Perron, and Philadelphia’s Sean Couturier, along with UFAs Damien Brunner and Peter Mueller, as six centers the Flames should pursue.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: They stand a better chance of landing Brunner or Mueller. I don’t believe the Blackhawks or Flyers wish to part with Kruger and Couturier, and recent reports out of Colorado claim the Avs new management wish to keep Stastny. Perron might be available, but only if they need to shed salary to re-sign Alex Pietrangelo and Chris Stewart.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The Canucks have signed forward Mike Santorelli.
WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: The Jets have signed defenseman Adam Pardy.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: The Oilers have signed Ryan Jones to a one-year contract.
