Flames win, Habs lose again, and the latest on Ryan Kesler, Nazem Kadri, Mike Santorelli, Jared Cowen and more.
CALGARY HERALD: In what could be his second-last home game with the Flames, Miikka Kiprusoff backstopped the club to a 3-2 upset win over the Detroit Red Wings. Regardless of the win, the Flames were officially eliminated from playoff contention.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Here’s hoping Kiprusoff gets one more home game so the Flames faithful can give him the send-off he richly deserves.
LA PRESSE: The Montreal Canadiens losing skid reached three games, falling to the Pittsburgh Penguins 6-4. Lars Eller (among the few Habs who played well) summed up his club’s recent woes thusly: “When we do not have a good start to the game, it starts to fuck up and everything collapses”. Earlier in the day, the Canadiens learned forward Ryan White received a five-game suspension for elbowing Flyers defenseman Kent Huskins in the head.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Three poor starts, primarily the result of lousy team defense, doomed the Canadiens in those games. The loss of defenseman Alexei Emelin is partially responsible, but there’s more to the Habs struggles this week than his absence.Time for Michel Therrien to employ the skill which has him mentioned as a coach-of-the-year candidate and find a solution to this problem.
VANCOUVER PROVINCE: The return of Ryan Kesler to the Canucks lineup has given the club a much-needed boost.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: And not a moment too soon. Without him, the Canucks path to this season’s playoffs would’ve been rockier.
TORONTO STAR: Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri has yet to score this month.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Leafs winning four of six games earlier this month overshadowed Kadri’s struggles, but their recent loss against Washington brought this problem to the fore. Still, Kadri has plenty of time to snap out of his goalless drought before the playoffs.
WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: Newcomer Mike Santorelli is settling in well with his new team.
OTTAWA SUN: Having missed most of this season recovering from hip surgery, Senators defenseman Jared Cowen appears no worse for wear.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: His return couldn’t come at a better time for the injury-ravaged Senators.
EDMONTON SUN: Oilers president Kevin Lowe offered an apology for his comments suggesting there were two tiers of Oilers fans.
