Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff supposedly retires, Jets not shopping Dustin Byfuglien, Oilers make contract offer to Sam Gagner, the latest on Shawn Horcoff, Milan Michalek, Mike Komisarek and more.
CALGARY SUN/CALGARY HERALD: Confusion reigns over the status of Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff thanks to a report out of Finland claiming the veteran netminder declined an invitation to the Finnish Olympic camp because he was retiring.
Flames GM Jay Feaster, however, claimed the report cited a statement Kiprusoff made two months ago, and that the goalie had yet to reach a decision. Meanwhile, there’s a rumor the Columbus Blue Jackets have sought permission from the Flames to speak with “Kipper” about forestalling retirement and joining the Blue Jackets.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: From what I’ve read and heard, Kiprusoff is all but certain to retire, but because there’s a chance he could change his mind, he’s yet to formally announce his intentions. If he does pack it in, I doubt another NHL club can convince him to change his mind.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: That won’t stop some in the local press from claiming otherwise.
EDMONTON SUN/TSN.CA/SPORTSNET: Robert Tychkowski reports the Oilers have begun contract talks with Sam Gagner this week in hopes of re-signing him to a multi-year contract. TSN reported the Oilers have made Gagner a multi-year offer but there’s still more work to be done. Mark Spector, meanwhile, reports the Oilers will not buy out Shawn Horcoff, but “do not take that to mean a compliance by out will not be used in EDM however. Quite possible.”
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It appears the Oilers are very keen to re-sign Gagner, but it’ll likely depend on making the dollars work for both sides. Interesting that they won’t buy out Horcoff but they could be waiting to do so next June, when he’ll only have one season remaining on his contract. As for other compliance buyout candidates, Ales Hemsky (who has one year at $5 million left on his contract) could be a possibility. Given his injury history and salary, I don’t see him having much trade value.

TORONTO SUN: Mike Komisarek’s days as a Maple Leaf is coming to an end, as the Leafs intend to buy out the remainder of his contract.
