Updates on Sidney Crosby, Henrik Lundqvist, Chris Stewart, Nicklas Lidstrom and more.
TRIBLIVE.COM: Pittsburgh Penguins new coach Mike Johnston hopes to lessen the workload for captain Sidney Crosby this season. “We have to ensure that other players on our team take some of the responsibility off his shoulders — both in leadership and also in performance,” Johnston said.
NEW YORK POST: Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist hopes his club avoids another sluggish start to this season. He’s also looking forward to what the club’s new additions can bring to the team.
THE HOCKEY NEWS: Buffalo Sabres forward Chris Stewart doesn’t want to hear talk of his club tanking the season to get a shot at prospect Connor McDavid. He’s motivated to improve his play and the Sabres performance this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Claiming a team is deliberately trying to throw a season to improve their draft standing is easy to say but difficult to prove. The players are motivated to win, no matter where their club sits in the standings. For a team to tank, the general manager must deliberately shed his best players to worsen the club’s depth, while the coach must ensure he puts his worst players on the ice in key moments during a game.
DETROIT FREE PRESS: Red Wings great Nicklas Lidstrom turned down Mike Babcock’s offer to join the club as an assistant coach but isn’t ruling out the possibility down the road. Lidstrom cited family reasons for remaining in Sweden.
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH: The Blues unveiled their new jersey yesterday.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Maybe it’s me but I don’t see much of a difference between their new jersey and their old one.
THE DENVER POST: Terry Frei believes former Avalanche forward Steve Moore should be honored with his own “night”.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Moore probably prefers to have justice served to Todd Bertuzzi for ending his career, or perhaps to have the NHL do more to curb unnecessary violence in the game.
MONTREAL GAZETTE: Jack Todd believes New York Islanders prospect Joshua Ho-Sang is being snubbed by Hockey Canada’s old boys network.
NBC SPORTS: Former NHL player Aleksey Morozov has called it a career. After spending seven seasons with the Pittsburgh Penguins from 1997-98 to 2003-04, Morozov spent the past ten seasons playing in Russia.
TORONTO SUN: The NHL reportedly wasn’t pleased with the TV show The Simpsons over a 1998 episode in which Krusty the Clown drinks from the Stanley Cup and then vomits into it.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The league is only picking up on this now? This episode’s been kicking around on TV and via YouTube for years! And it’s funny! Back when The Simpsons were still fresh and funny.
