Earlier in the day, the Blues announced they were sending little-used goalie Brian Elliott to the minors for a conditioning stint.
SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS/DETROIT NEWS: Antti Niemi made 27 saves as the San Jose Sharks blanked the Detroit Red Wings 2-0 for their third straight win. Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns scored the game’s only goals.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The win, combined with the NY Rangers loss to the Ottawa Senators, moved the Isles into a tie for eighth overall with the Rangers, though the latter holds a game in hand.
ARIZONA REPUBLIC/THE TENNESSEAN: The Phoenix Coyotes snapped their six-game losing streak in dramatic fashion, exploding for six first period goals on route to a 7-4 beatdown of the Nashville Predators.
MIAMI HERALD/THE BUFFALO NEWS: The Florida Panthers edged the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 in a shootout. Earlier in the day, the Panthers learned veteran blueline Ed Jovanovski would undergo season-ending hip surgery.
WASHINGTON POST: Alexander Ovechkin was recently struck in the chin by a puck during practice, requiring 22 stitches to close the wound. The injury won’t keep him out of the Capitals next game.
STARTRIBUNE.COM: Minnesota Wild goalie Josh Harding has returned to the lineup after missing several weeks for treatments for his MS condition.
