NJ.COM: Jaromir Jagr tied Mario Lemieux for 10th on the all-time assist lead as the New Jersey Devils edged the Washington Capitals 2-1. Capitals captain and leading scorer Alexander Ovechkin missed his second straight game, while Mikhail Grabovski left the game with an apparent leg injury.
DENVER POST: The Colorado Avalanche held off a late surge by the Florida Panthers for a 3-2 win. Scottie Upshall scored both goals for the Panthers in a losing cause.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Despite failing to set an attendance record, the 2014 Winter Classic was a huge success, pulling in $20 million in profit for the league. While I enjoy the outdoor games I also believe there can be too much of a good thing, so I’m glad there will be fewer ones next season.
STLTODAY.COM: The St. Louis Blues honored the memory of Mandi Schwartz, the late sister of teammate Jaden Schwartz, by attending the “White Out for Mandi” at Yale University, where Mandi was a student. She died of leukemia in 2011 at age 23.
TSN.CA; Vaclav Prospal turned down the Vancouver Canucks tryout offer and has announced his retirement. He played 16 seasons for Columbus, NY Rangers, Tampa Bay, Anaheim, Florida, Ottawa and Philadelphia, amassing 765 points in 1,108 games.
