A listing of the notable UFAs still available, Claude Giroux arrested in Ottawa, the Flyers and Sharks swing a trade, an update on Ryan Johansen, plus the latest on the Capitals and Lightning.
BLEACHER REPORT: My (shrinking) list of notable unrestricted free agents still available, including Martin Brodeur, Mike Ribeiro, Daniel Alfredsson, Michael Del Zotto, David Legwand and David Booth.
PHILLY.COM: Flyers captain Claude Giroux was arrested Monday night but not charged for allegedly grabbing the buttocks of a male police officer outside an Ottawa bar.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The headlines literally write themselves. “Giroux the butt of jokes”. “Giroux cops a feel”. “Flyer captain makes an ass of himself”. Oh, the fun you can have.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH: The Blue Jackets aren’t concerned about matching any potential offer sheets for RFA Ryan Johansen, but it could set his value higher than the Jackets would like.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s a gamble, but one which rarely pans out. The last offer sheet was two years ago, when the Flyers gambled (and lost) with their attempt to sign away Shea Weber from the Nashville Predators with a very expensive, long-term, heavily front-loaded deal. Given the new restrictions on term and salary variance for contracts under the current CBA, it becomes even more difficult to sign away a player via offer sheet. Doesn’t mean someone might not try with Johansen, but their odds of landing him are longer now than under the previous CBA.
WASHINGTON POST: Capitals winger Tom Wilson suffered an ankle injury during a recent fall. The severity of the injury remains unknown.
TAMPA TRIBUNE: Former Lightning GM Jay Feaster has rejoined the club as executive director of community hockey development.
