Blackhawks rally against the Kings to force Game 7 of the Western Conference Final, updates on the Rangers, HNiC legend Bob Cole could be calling his final games, and the latest on the Red Wings and Wild.
CHICAGO SUN-TIMES: Patrick Kane scored the winner late in the third period as the Blackhawks rallied from a 3-2 deficit to defeat the LA Kings 4-3 in Game 6 of the Western Conference Final. The seventh and deciding game will be played Sunday evening in Chicago.
LOS ANGELES TIMES: Helene Elliott believes the Kings, once poised to knock out the Blackhawks and advance to the Stanley Cup Final, now find themselves on the ropes.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Kings have been streaky throughout their playoff run this spring, so it’s no surprise the trend continues in the Conference Final. They lost the first game, won three straight then dropped the next two. The Blackhawks, meanwhile, showed the heart of a champion before in this year’s playoffs, overcoming a 2-0 series deficit in their opening-round series against the St. Louis Blues to win that series in six games. We shouldn’t be shocked over their rallying back from a 3-1 deficit in this series to force Game 7 at home.
NEW YORK POST: With the Rangers marching to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in 20 years, New Yorkers are embracing the team.
NORTHJERSEY.COM: Andrew Gross examines how Rangers GM Glen Sather built his club into a Cup contender this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Sather deserves credit for building this roster. Of course, a few weeks ago, when the Blueshirts were down 3-1 in their division final against the Pittsburgh Penguins and booed off the ice following Game 4 of that series at Madison Square Garden. some folks were calling for Sather’s head on a pike. To his credit, Gross wasn’t among them. I wonder if this team is built for long-term success or if this spring is just a one-off. Time will tell.
TORONTO STAR: With Rogers Sportsnet taking over Hockey Night in Canada’s production starting next season, long-time play-by-play man Bob Cole could be calling his final games.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ve had my criticism of Cole in the past, but few play-by-play men capture the full drama and excitement of an NHL game – especially during the playoffs – like Cole. If you have a chance, tune into f Sunday’s Game 7 between the Kings and Blackhawks on Hockey Night in Canada. It could be the last time we hear this broadcasting legend calling an NHL game.
MLIVE.COM: The Detroit Red Wings are on the verge of re-signing Grand Rapids Griffins coach Jeff Blashill and will open contract talks next week with Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock.
STARTRIBUNE.COM: The Minnesota Wild are close to re-signing head coach Mike Yeo.
