Recaps of Sunday’s games involving American NHL teams, plus the latest on Evgeni Malkin, Martin Havlat, Harry Zolnierczyk and Bobby Butler.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE/DETROIT NEWS: The Chicago Blackhawks season-opening points streak continues as they edged the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 in a shootout. Patrick Kane scored the game-tying goal with just over two minutes left in the third period to force the game into extra time. The Blackhawks record now stands at 19-0-3.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s going to come as a shock when the Blackhawks finally drop a game in regulation.
NEW YORK POST/BUFFALO NEWS: Rick Nash and Ryan Callahan scored in a shootout as the NY Rangers nipped the Buffalo Sabres 3-2. Patrick Kaleta of the Sabres could earn a suspension for hitting Rangers center Brad Richards from behind into the boards.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’ll be very surprised if Kaleta isn’t suspended.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH/DENVER POST: In his first game back in action, Colorado Avalanche center Ryan O’Reilly accidentally tipped a shot into his own net, tying the game and setting up the Columbus Blue Jackets for an eventual 2-1 overtime win over the Avalanche.
NEWSOBSERVER.COM/SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Dan Ellis stepped in midway through the second period to replace an injured Cam Ward, backstopping the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers. Ward appeared to suffer a leg injury. He wasn’t the only goalie to have a rough day, as Panthers call-up Jacob Markstrom was unable to start because his goaltending gear was misplaced by airline baggage handlers.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: It’s becoming that kind of season for the Panthers. If it weren’t for bad luck, they’d have none at all. No further word as to the severity of Ward’s injury.
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Penguins center Evgeni Malkin was cleared for contact and skated Sunday at practice with his teammates, but isn’t expected to be in the lineup for tonight’s game against Tampa Bay. The Penguins will also be without defenseman Paul Martin (lower body injury).
MERCURYNEWS.COM: The San Jose Sharks could be without forward Martin Havlat during their upcoming two-game road trip to Western Canada.
CSNPHILLY.COM: The NHL has suspended Harry Zolnierczyk of the Philadelphia Flyers for four games because of a reckless hit on Ottawa Senators defenseman Mike Lundin.
NJ.COM: The New Jersey Devils have placed Bobby Butler on waivers.
