CANADA.COM: TSN’s Bob McKenzie took to Twitter last night to break the news his network has lost out to CBC and Sportsnet in the bidding for NHL Canadian TV rights. The deals are expected to be announced today and will be for 12 years. It’s believed CBC will pay up to $200 million (double its current fee) to keep Hockey Night in Canada. The NHL also released further details this morning.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I didn’t expect this at all. TSN’s been the leader in NHL coverage in Canada in recent years and it was expected their parent company would outbid CBC and Sportsnet. TSN’s NHL contract expires at the end of this season, and they’ll still have rights to televise local Leafs and Jets games, but they’ll now be limited strictly to highlight packages and specialty shows like That’s Hockey, the NHL Draft, Trade Deadline and the opening day of free agency.

NBC SPORTS: Ten former players are suing the NHL claiming the league didn’t do enough to protect them from concussions.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The players, including Rick Vaive and Gary Leeman, played from the 1970s through the early 1990s. They face a difficult road trying to prove the league deliberately concealed the severity of concussion injuries from them.
