DENVER POST: Colorado Avalanche coach Patrick Roy was fined $10K by the NHL for his late-game outburst aimed at the Anaheim Ducks (particularly Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau) during the Avs 6-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Had Roy not partially knocked over the glass partition between the two benches he might have simply gotten off with a warning. Regardless, the league is quickly sending Roy a message that those kind of heated outbursts won’t be tolerated.
BOSTON HERALD: Chris Kelly scored on a penalty shot while teammates Patrice Bergeron and Milan Lucic also tallied as the Bruins marched to a 3-1 home-opener win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Marcel Goc scored twice, Tim Thomas made 25 saves and Aleksander Barkov became the youngest player in post-expansion(1967) history to score a goal as the Florida Panthers spoiled the Dallas Stars home opener with a 4-2 victory.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Thomas played very well, showing no ill-effects from his year-long sabbatical.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: The Blue Jackets rebuilding process has revitalized the franchise, especially their season ticket sales, which increased by almost 2, 000 this summer.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: There’s a positive buzz about the Blue Jackets which hasn’t been felt since their first-ever playoff appearance in 2009. Still, the Blue Jackets must turn in a playoff contention performance this season if they’re to build upon that excitement.
NEWSOBERSVER.COM: The Carolina Hurricanes will look to a core group (led by the Staal brothers, Cam Ward and Jeff Skinner) to lead them into playoff contention this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I’m not convinced the Hurricanes have the overall defensive depth to make the playoffs this season.

DETROIT NEWS: Red Wings coach Mike Babcock believes the NHL will one day outlaw fighting.
