Check out the latest following a frenzied opening day to the NHL’s 2013 free agency period.
SPORTING NEWS: Mikhael Grabovski, Jaromir Jagr, Damien Brunner, Ilya Bryzgalov and Mason Raymond headline the best remaining talent in this summer’s NHL UFA market.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Despite the lack of depth of genuine star talent in this year’s free agent market, all the big names came off the board yesterday, leaving slim pickings for teams seeking additional help for their rosters.
COLUMBUS DISPATCH: New Blue Jackets forward Nathan Horton believes Columbus “feels like home” after inking a seven-year, $37.1 million million. Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen said he might still shop around the free agent market, and hasn’t ruled out re-signing Vinny Prospal.
LOS ANGELES TIMES: Lisa Dillman reports the Anaheim Ducks shipping Bobby Ryan to Ottawa yesterday makes the club more cap compliant over the long haul, especially with the new contracts for Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry kicking in this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Ducks had little choice, as they had limited cap space and needed to shed salary if they were to become cap compliant for this season. The Ducks got themselves a good return from the Senators, particularly Jakob Silfverberg, who has the makings of a scoring star.
NORTHJERSEY.COM: The NY Rangers may be close to re-signing defenseman Ryan McDonagh.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some Rangers fans are nervous a rival club could try to steal McDonagh away with a big offer sheet. While it’s possible, I don’t think it’ll happen.
THE TENNESSEAN: The Predators additions (Matt Cullen, Viktor Stalberg, Eric Nystrom, Matt Hendricks) make them a better team than they were a year ago.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Preds also parted ways with Sergei Kostitsyn, terminating the remaining year of his contract as he heads to the KHL.
NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Though the Carolina Hurricanes made small additions yesterday in Mike Komisarek and Anton Khudobin, they still got better.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Keep an eye on Khudobin, he could become an eventual replacement for Cam Ward.
STARTRIBUNE.COM: Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher defended his signing Matt Cooke to a three-year contract.
MIAMI HERALD: David J. Neal on why the Florida Panthers were fairly quiet yesterday in the UFA market.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: They made their big moves two years ago. They’re sticking with youth now.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: The Blackhawks have brought back Nikolai Khabibulin on a one-year contract worth a base of $1.7 million with $300K in signing bonuses.
DENVER POST: The Colorado Avalanche yesterday signed defenseman Andre Benoit to a one-year, $900K contract.
DALLAS MORNING NEWS: After signing goalie Dan Ellis, the Dallas Stars may be done in the UFA market.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Having made a blockbuster trade earlier this week for Tyler Seguin, there’s not really much in the UFA market they need to pursue.
