The latest on Alexander Ovechkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jason Pominville, Andrej Meszaros, Shawn Matthias and more.
WASHINGTON POST: Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin is no fan of the NHL’s new rule against players tucking their jerseys into their hockey pants. Ovechkin has always preferred playing with his jersey tucked. “I’m the guy who love that kind of stuff. I’m kind of upset about it, but most important thing, nobody talk to us, the players”, said Ovechkin. “They think it can be dangerous for somebody. I think it’s kind of stupid”.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Funny how the league had no problem with The Great One wearing part of his jersey tucked inside his pants back in the day.
PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE: New Penguins goalie coach Mike Bales believes Marc-Andre Fleury can reclaim his place among the NHL’s elite goaltenders. Bales cited Fleury’s skill and athleticism as factors which work in the netminder’s favor, believing he only needs some minor adjustments in his technique.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: I believe Fleury’s problem is with the mental part of the game. In recent years he got rattled after giving up an early or soft goal. Hopefully, he’ll rediscover the focus and discipline which helped him backstop the Penguins to a Stanley Cup.
STARTRIBUNE.COM: Jason Pominville is enjoying his first training camp with the Minnesota Wild. Pominville was dealt to the Wild at last season’s trade deadline.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: A strong camp could also help his contract negotiations with the Wild.
PHILLY.COM: Flyers defenseman Andrej Meszaros made a promising first step back from off-season shoulder surgery in his club’s 4-3 loss in preseason play to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: A few weeks ago there were reports suggesting the Flyers could shop Meszaros in order to become cap compliant for the season opener. Of late, however, it appears as though the club intends to keep him.
ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Rostislav Klesla was stretchered off the ice after getting hit by LA Kings forward Jordan Nolan during the first period of the Coyotes-Kings preseason game yesterday. Nolan appeared to hit Klesla in the head with his shoulder, leaving his feet in the process. It’s expected the league will review the hit. Klesla was alert and conscious leaving the ice, and will receive further tests today. The Coyotes downed the Kings 4-2.
SUN-SENTINEL.COM: Blossoming center Shawn Matthias hopes to fill the void left by the departed Stephen Weiss, who signed with the Detroit Red Wings over the summer.
STLTODAY.COM: Blues goalie Jake Allen understands he could begin this season in the minors. The Blues also have Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott under contract and have no intention of carrying three goalies this season.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Allen is waiver-exempt which is why he’ll likely start in the minors. It’s possible, however, the Blues at some point could shop Halak or Elliott if the need arises for depth elsewhere in the lineup, resulting in Allen’s return.
NEW YORK POST: Promising Rangers forward Chris Kreider will get a new lease on life under new head coach Alain Vigneault.
