PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW/NEW YORK POST: The Pittsburgh Penguins set an NHL record for consecutive victories in one month (15)  by blanking the NY Islanders 2-0. It came at a cost, however, as Sidney Crosby was struck in the mouth by a Brooks Orpik slapshot. He left the game to undergo dental surgery. The injury overshadowed Jarome Iginla’s debut with the Penguins.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Crosby was held overnight in hospital for observation. Hopefully he doesn’t suffer any concussion symptoms.

PIONEER PRESS/LOS ANGELES TIMES: The Minnesota Wild overcame a two-goal deficit to down the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 in a shootout. Zach Parise (1G, 1A) and Mikko Koivu (2 assists) led the way for the Wild, who move into a tie with Vancouver for first in the Northwest Division.

WASHINGTON POST/BUFFALO NEWS: Alexander Ovechkin scored the game-winner in a shootout as the Washington Capitals defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-3.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: With the NY Rangers stalled in the standings, the Capitals are now only two points out of a playoff berth.

SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS/ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Logan Couture scored the winner in a shootout as the San Jose Sharks edged the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2.

MIAMI HERALD/NJ.COM: Shawn Matthias and Dmitry Kulikov rallied the Florida Panthers to a 3-2 overtime win over the struggling New Jersey Devils, who’ve now lost three straight games.

DENVER POST/THE TENNESSEAN: Tyson Barrie tallied the game’s only goal as the Colorado Avalanche nipped the Nashville Predators 1-0 in overtime.

DALLAS MORNING NEWS: The Stars face a critical point of the season. Does management trade away its pending free agents by the April 3 deadline, or keep them and push for a playoff  berth?

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: Former Rangers pest Sean Avery posted a tweet appearing to call for the NY Rangers to fire coach John Tortorella.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Some will dismiss anything the outspoken Avery has to say, but in this instance, I suspect he speaks for a majority of Rangers fans.

DETROIT NEWS: Newly signed defenseman Danny DeKeyser is joining the Red Wings lineup.
