ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER/MERCURYNEWS.COM: Sheldon Souray’s goal with 6.39 remaining in the third period lifted the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-1 win over the San Jose Sharks, handing the latter their first overtime loss. Viktor Fasth made 25 saves for the win, while Saku Koivu also scored for the Ducks. Logan Couture had the Sharks’ only goal.
AZCENTRAL.COM/STARTRIBUNE.COM: The Phoenix Coyotes scored twice, then held off a third period rally to edge the Minnesota Wild 2-1. Lauri Korpikoski and Martin Hanzal were the Coyotes goal-scorers, while Zach Parise tallied his 200th career goal. Zach and his father, former NHLer JP Parise, are only the second father-son duo to reach the 200-goal mark. Bobby and Brett Hull were the first to achieve that milestone.
DALLAS MORNING NEWS/DENVER POST: Jamie Benn scored twice and set up another to carry the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche. It was a milestone game for Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk, who played his 1,000th career NHL game. He also scored one of the Avs two goals.
CBS SPORTS: Powerful player agents within the NBA have floated the name of NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr as a possible successor to NBA union chief Billy Hunter.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: Fehr seems unlikely to jump to the NBA. He has an ongoing contract with the NHLPA, turns 65 in July, and has hinted at retirement. It’s believed his brother, Steve, will eventually succeed him as PA director.
BND.COM: St. Louis Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko was named NHL rookie of the month for January 2013.
THE BUFFALO NEWS: The Sabres are struggling to find offensive depth beyond their first line of Thomas Vanek, Jason Pominville and Cody Hodgson.
WASHINGTON POST: The struggling Capitals are hoping improvements to their special team play will lead to more victories.
CHICAGO TRIBUNE: Blackhawks second line center Dave Bolland could return to the lineup from a leg injury for Tuesday’s game against San Jose.
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW: Penguins veteran defenseman Brooks Orpik may not be hitting as much as he used to, but his shot-blocking is on the rise.
NEW YORK POST: The NY Islanders have placed defenseman Radek Martinek on injured reserve.
