Check out the latest on which teams may or may not be active during the opening day of the NHL’s unrestricted free agent market.

COLUMBUS DISPATCH: Aaron Portzline reports the Blue Jackets have other options if they fail to land Nathan Horton via free agency. Those include “Valtteri Filppula of Detroit, Viktor Stalberg of Chicago, Stephen Weiss of Florida, Mike Ribeiro of Washington, Tyler Bozak of Toronto and Mason Raymond and Derek Roy of Vancouver.” Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen has vowed to improve his forward lines, and suggested a trade was also possible.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Horton met with Blue Jackets officials in Columbus on Wednesday. They could have the inside track on signing him.

ESPN.COM: Pierre LeBrun last night reported Ray Emery is likely leaving Chicago, and expect the Flyers could pursue him.

THE TENNESSEAN: Josh Cooper reports the Nashville Predators are willing to spend this summer to land a forward via free agency.  Targets could include Nathan Horton, Viktor Stalberg and Derek Roy. Cooper also lists possible UFA options on defense and in goal for the Predators, including Douglas Murray and Thomas Greiss.

ARIZONA REPUBLIC: Sarah McLellan reports the Phoenix Arizona Coyotes are searching for a first line center and a scoring left winger via free agency. Possible targets could include Mike Ribeiro and Jarome Iginla.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Chip Alexander reports the Carolina Hurricanes focus is to improve their defense. Options could include Andrew Ference and Rob Scuderi .

WINNIPEG SUN: Ken Wiebe reports possible destinations for former Jets defenseman Ron Hainsey includes the NY Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals. He suggests the Devils or Panthers could be a destination for Nik Antropov, and wonders if Calgary or St. Louis might have interest in Kyle Wellwood, or if the Lightning or Sabres could have interest in Mike Santorelli.

NEW YORK POST: Larry Brooks reports the frugal NY Rangers have held talks with checking line forward Dominic Moore and could have interest in former Canucks Maxime Lapierre, who played for Rangers coach Alain Vigneault in both Vancouver and in junior hockey.

BUFFALO NEWS: John Vogl reports the Sabres aren’t expected to make a big splash in free agency, preferring to target experienced mid-tier players like  Colby Armstrong, Jack Skille, Chad LaRose, Brenden Morrow and Danny Cleary.

MERCURYNEWS.COM: David Pollak reports limited cap space will prevent the San Jose Sharks from making any major UFA signings this summer.

WASHINGTON POST: Katie Carrera expects the Capitals will be quiet in this year’s free agent market.
