Bernier backs off trade request.

Bernier backs off trade request.

NBC PRO HOCKEY TALK: James O’Brien, citing a report from the LA Kings blog Mayor’s Manor, reports Kings center Andrei Loktionov has requested a trade. He played 39 regular season and two playoff games last season with the Kings, but because of the club’s depth at center, was unable to crack the lineup this season  and is currently in the AHL. Backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier, meanwhile, has to a degree backed off his trade demand, hoping to steal more starts from Jonathan Quick this season.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: If the Kings feel they need depth elsewhere (defense, perhaps?), I could see Loktionov used as a trade chip. As for Bernier, I expect he’ll be retained by the Kings this season, and shopped this summer.

NJ.COM: Rich Chere reports the New Jersey Devils had some interest in re-signing winger Petr Sykora, who ultimately signed with SC Bern in Switzerland.  As per Chere: “Sykora would be eligible to sign with an NHL club when Bern’s season is over and prior to the April 3 NHL trade deadline, but he’d have to go through waivers.”

SPECTOR’S NOTE: For those who are wondering, that’s different than a player on a team’s reserve list or an unsigned restricted free agent, which was changed under the new CBA. As per Hockeybuzz:  “All Players on a Club’s Reserve List and Restricted Free Agent List will be exempt from application of CBA 13.23 Waivers in the case of a mid-season signing.”

NORTHJERSEY.COM: The Devils have also placed enforcer Cam Janssen on waivers. If unclaimed by noon ET today, he’ll be sent down to their AHL affiliate.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Zach Boychuk on waivers with hopes of demoting him to their AHL affiliate.

MLIVE.COM: Ansar Khan reports Detroit Red Wings goaltender Joey MacDonald faces an uncertain future, as the Wings last summer signed Jonas Gustavsson to be Jimmy Howard’s backup. MacDonald is currently recovering from a bulging disk in his back.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: MacDonald could be traded once he’s finally cleared for action. He can also be sent to the minors without passing through waivers on a two-week conditioning stint, which is likely to happen once he’s received medical clearance.
