David Clarkson appears headed to UFA market.

David Clarkson appears headed to UFA market.

NORTHJERSEY.COM: Tom Gulitti reports the New Jersey Devils re-signed center Dainius to a three-year, $9.3 million contract, while multiple sources expect Patrik Elias will also return on a multi-year deal. As for David Clarkson, it appears he’ll be testing the UFA market on July 5.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Clarkson will command big bucks on the UFA market so no surprise he’s going to test his value. I doubt he’ll be returning with the Devils.

ESPN.COM’s Pierre LeBrun reports via Twitter “The Sabres remain intent on moving Ryan Miller but whether it happens this summer or at trade deadline next season remains to be seen…”

SPECTOR’S  NOTE: It’s sounding like the Sabres won’t move Miller or Thomas Vanek this summer, but rather have them play out the final year of their contracts in hopes their trade value will increase for next year’s trade deadline.

MIAMI HERALD: George Richards reports the Florida Panthers had hoped to re-sign center Stephen Weiss, but it appears he’ll test the UFA market. It also appears Jose Theodore will become a UFA.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Weiss will probably be among those UFA snapped up within the opening two days of the UFA market.

STARTRIBUNE.COM: Michael Russo reports Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher still has some cap space to clear this summer. Russo speculates the Wild’s recent addition of Nino Niederreiter could result in Devin Setoguchi ($3 million cap hit) being shopped. Center Zenon Konopka is also being shopped. Defenseman Tom Gilbert ($4 million) could be bought out, though with the recent trade of Justin Falk, that could put the Wild in the market for a defenseman. Winger Dany Heatley’s shoulder injury prevents him from being bought out, but Russo wonders if there could be some way to trade him.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: I expect Gilbert will be gone via buyout or trade. Setoguchi could also be a goner. Can’t see anyone taking Heatley’s contract ($7.5 million cap hit, $5 million in real salary).

WASHINGTON POST: Katie Carrera reports Capitals forward Matt Hendricks would prefer to stay with Washington, but the club hasn’t spoken to him about a new contract, leaving him preparing to hit the UFA market.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: The Capitals are pressed for cap space and must re-sign Karl Alzner and Marcus Johansson. Hendricks shouldn’t have too much difficulty finding a new NHL team to play with.

CSNBAYAREA.COM: Kevin Kurz reports an NHL source claims the San Jose Sharks are shopping winger T.J. Galiardi, likely as a result of their acquisition this weekend of Tyler Kennedy from the Penguins.

NEWSOBSERVER.COM: Chip Alexander reports Carolina Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford will seek a defenseman in the upcoming UFA market. One option could be Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ference.

SPECTOR’S NOTE: Ference might be a good fit for the Hurricanes, bringing experience and leadership to their defense corps.
