The latest on the Senators, Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Oilers and Jets.
OTTAWA SUN: Don Brennan believes the Senators, rather than target an expensive trade target like Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan, should instead focus on an affordable potential free agent forward like Chicago Bryan Bickell, who has attracted attention with his solid performance in this year’s playoffs.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: As Brennan suggests, Bickell could be on the verge of a breakout performance, and might be a good fit alongside Jason Spezza. Then again, this could also be a case of a good role player simply having a better-than-normal playoff in a contract year. Brennan is right that chasing someone like Bobby Ryan would be an expensive proposition, while the pickings in this summer’s free agent market are currently pretty slim. Someone like Bickell might be their best option.
TORONTO STAR: Kevin McGran warns Maple Leafs management to learn from the Chicago Blackhawks salary cap mistakes of three years ago, especially when it comes to investing in centers. They cannot afford to retain both Tyler Bozak and Mikhail Grabovski, meaning one of them will have to go.
SPECTOR’S NOTE: If it comes down to a choice, keeping Bozak (who has terrific chemistry with Phil Kessel) appears the logical guy to retain.
LA PRESSE: Marc Antoine Godin examines what goes into the Montreal Canadiens planning for the entry draft.
EDMONTON JOURNAL: Friday’s tornadoes in Oklahoma led to the cancellation of the Oklahoma City Barons playoff game. The Barons are the AHL farm team of the Edmonton Oilers.
WINNIPEG FREE PRESS: The Jets plan to host a draft party on June 30.
